Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan has addressed industry fears regarding generative AI, calling the notion that it will replace human creativity wholesale "nonsense." Speaking in Paris ahead of the release of his new 250 million dollar blockbuster The Odyssey, Nolan expressed confidence that big-budget films shot on location will survive the technology.

Nolan noted a unique public pushback against artificial intelligence, stating that he has never seen a technology so successfully adopted by Wall Street and tech companies but so thoroughly rejected by the public. He pointed out that young people in particular have coined the term "AI slop" to describe the flood of low-quality generated content on social media.

The director highlighted the importance of employer responsibility, arguing that studios and producers should not use AI to sidestep accountability for their actions. Nolan compared the current debate to the historic 2023 Hollywood strikes, which shut down productions and cost major studios billions of dollars over worries of AI automation.
