The global AI boom is reshaping South Korea's society, turning semiconductor engineers at Samsung and SK Hynix into the country's most sought-after bachelors. Boosted by soaring profits from HBM chip sales, SK Hynix employees recently received historic bonuses worth $476,000, boosting their social status.

Matchmakers at Sunoo, a Seoul wedding consultant, reported a surge in clients requesting matches with chip workers. In Sunoo's rating system, Samsung employees rose from 80 to 84 (out of 100) in spouse score, while SK Hynix workers climbed from 78 to 82, nearing ratings traditionally reserved for doctors.

However, this windfall is stoking public anxieties. The Bank of Korea warned of a "K-shaped" economy where a handful of tech workers race ahead while the broader economy falls behind, fueling debate over an "AI dividend" tax. Additionally, Samsung plans to fully automate its fabs by 2030.
