Apple sues OpenAI for allegedly running a coordinated campaign to steal trade secrets through poached employees
Apple has filed a major lawsuit against OpenAI in federal court, alleging that the artificial intelligence giant has been systematically poaching its hardware engineers and designers to steal confidential hardware secrets. Tang Tan, Apple's former vice president of product design who spent 24 years at the company, is named in the lawsuit. OpenAI has reportedly hired more than 400 former Apple employees over the past year. Apple alleges that the hiring was part of a coordinated effort to access proprietary designs and unreleased iPhone prototypes to speed up OpenAI's own hardware ambitions. OpenAI also spent $6.5 billion to acquire IO Products, a startup co-founded by Jony Ive and other longtime Apple designers. While OpenAI denies the allegations, the lawsuit claims the stolen data was used to design a voice-guided AI device.
