
Anthropic hit with class-action lawsuit for allegedly misleading users over Claude Max subscription caps
In a federal lawsuit filed on Monday, Anthropic customer Karl Kahn accused the developer of Claude AI of fraudulent marketing regarding its premium subscription tiers. The lawsuit, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, seeks reimbursement for customers who upgraded to the $100-a-month "Max 5x" and $200-a-month "Max 20x" plans. While Anthropic's promotional materials promise these premium plans deliver exactly five and twenty times the message limits of the standard $20-a-month Claude Pro tier, the suit alleges the actual limits are "far below the advertised amount." In Kahn's own experience, he hit the weekly message cap on Max 20x within weeks, consuming 15% of his weekly allowance in a single five-hour coding session. The dispute has sparked heavy debate in the r/ClaudeAI subreddit over the transparency of token-based billing and how AI companies calculate usage limits. As coding tasks consume massive amounts of context window tokens, heavy power users complain that AI providers are not being transparent about their internal rate-limiting metrics.
