HR consultant wins English court case using AI lawyer in apparent legal first
An artificial intelligence law firm has won a trial in an English court, marking what is believed to be the first time a case has been won using an AI lawyer. Freelance HR consultant Tamires Camal Taquidir used the AI service Garfield AI to resolve an unpaid debt dispute of £7,000 at the Wandsworth county court. Taquidir paid Garfield AI approximately £400 to draft the legal letters, dispute a counterclaim, prepare four witness statements, and compile the document bundle. The AI firm, which was authorized by the UK Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in April last year, then hired a human barrister, Dominic Li, to represent the client during the three-hour trial. While the barrister noted that courtroom advocacy remains a fundamentally human exercise, Garfield's co-founder Philip Young called the win a landmark moment for access to justice, particularly for small businesses that cannot afford traditional litigation. The success stands in contrast to Pinsent Masons, an international law firm that recently referred itself to the SRA after its internal AI hallucinated search results and misled a court.
